- Match Report - Carmarthen Athletic 7 -0 Cardiff Met VI
A frosty saturday afternoon was luckily accompanied by blue skies as Carmarthen faced top 4 rivals Cardiff Met this week. With the sun shining down, the pitch was sufficiently thawed during the day for play to go ahead. Carmarthen drew first blood when their high press yielded free possession in the D, with a rebound falling into the lap of striker Tom Ferguson, who duly opened his account. Carmarthen kept their foot on the accelerator, with their front 3 interplay yielding a goal for forward Jonti Merry, doubling Carmarthen’s lead with a silky placed shot. Cardiff enjoyed spells of possession, with their forays into the opposition D yielding fruit, and despite some wonder tackles from veteran centre back Dave Ferguson, Carmarthen were reduced to 10 men for 2 minutes for a foul too many in their own 25. Despite this, Carmarthen steadied the ship and added a 2nd goal for Ferguson, who’s placed shot could not be saved by the keeper who had been dragged out of position. The centre midfield combination of Ollie Shaw and Duncan Ecclestone consistently had the ascendancy and served quality possession to their attacking players. The marauding runs of wingers Cai Morgan, Josh Gwynne, boosted by a rotating Ryan Carvey, proved too much for Cardiff met, and their deep runs opened up space for the forwards to operate. Ferguson’s hat trick was assured by half time as he found himself one on one with the keeper, and fired off a vicious strike to find the back of the net. Carmarthen entered the break 5-0 to the good. Manager Doug Shaw warned the team of complacency, and urged them to remain clinical. The team clearly took his words on board, and controlled the tempo from the offset. The back 3 of Russell Horsey, Lee Richardson and league debutant James Culf, handled possession well and built up play from back. Cardiff met continued to press, and Carmarthen found themselves reduced to 10 men once again following a 2nd green card for a desperate tackle. Cardiff produced their best chance of the game in this period, but keeper Lee Jones answered the call and kept the clean sheet intact. Ferguson added his 4th, equalling the team record for goals in a single game, once again firing off a thunderous shot to the keeper’s dismay. Carmarthen continued to find chance after chance, with captain Osian Evans coming agonisingly close on several occasion, in what was surely a frustrating day at the office. Young prospect Josh Palmer also found himself centimetres away from converting on the back post on two occasions, thanks to his incredible positional play. As the game came to an end Carmarthen found one final flourish as the forward triumvirate linked once more for Merry to secure a hat trick of his own. The game ended 7-0 in Carmarthen’s favour, as they respond emphatically after a difficult two weeks of away fixtures. They now challenge Bridgend 3 next week as they look to build on a truly complete performance. Man of the match: Tom Ferguson for a virtuoso performance in front of goal

- Carmarthen 6 - 1 Fishguard
Torrential rain and wind made for rough conditions as Carmarthen hosted Fishguard in the De Cymru 2 West Wales Derby. With both teams looking to cement their place in the top 4, the stakes were high. Carmarthen began well winning multiple short corners through young forward Josh Gwynne, but failed to convert pressure into points. A strong opening 15 was thwarted by a pinpoint counterattack from Fishguard, who opened the scoring. Carmarthen continued to utilise their airtight press to create pressure high up the pitch, and were duly rewarded when midfielder Jonti Merry drew in multiple defenders with a surging run, before finding captain Osian Evans who slotted home the equaliser with a pushed finish Half time came and the elements continued to punish, with wet surface and howling winds providing some challenging conditions. Carmarthen started the second half strongly, with a 2nd goal coming early - forward Tom Ferguson firing off a first touch finish from a baseline drive from Evans. The momentum would continue building for Carmarthen, with a fluid transfer game giving the midfield pairing of Jonti Merry and Cai Morgan the time and space to dictate the game. A 3rd goal quickly followed when wide midfielder Adam Poole put in a strong drive into the D before passing to Evans, who under pressure from the keeper found Merry’s late run, with Merry firing home. Fans who’s braved the elements were not let down by the on field action, as Carmarthen’s 4th goal came from a wonderful team move. The ball was played across the back 3, to midfielder Steffan Walters. Walters played an incisive pass to Merry who put Ferguson in space at the penalty spot to score his 2nd. Fishguard enjoyed bursts of attacking play, but key tackles from Ryan Carvey and Lee Richardson held the line. Keeper Lee Jones marshalled the defence well, and a goal line stop from Bryan Geatrick meant Carmarthen weathered the storm. The last quarter of the game saw Carmarthen relentlessly continue their pressure and transfer game. Buildup play from the back was wonderful with centre back Russell Horsey distributing from defence. A debut goal for wide mid William Heath marked Carmarthen’s 5th as he finished a tricky pass from Evans following one of his forays down the baseline. With time winding down, Carmarthen utilised their passing game incredibly effectively, totally managing the final passages. A penalty corner won again through the relentless pressure of forward Josh Richardson led to Carmarthen’s 6th and final goal, with captain Evans converting a dragflick just inside the left post.

- Match Report (M1) CAHC v Gwent (3) - 12th Nov 🏑🏴
Match report: Osain Evans Carmarthen 4 - 5 Gwent 3s An uncharacteristically dry day in Carmarthen as Gwent travelled West for a 3rd vs 4th place clash. With a chance at the top spot of the table for both teams if other results broke favourably, the stakes were high. Gwent opened the scoring with some excellent attacking play leading to a deflection for a first goal. Both teams traded chances until Carmarthen striker Tom Ferguson’s relentless pressing paid dividends, as he managed a touch on a stray pass from the Gwent defence that looped the ball over the keeper’s shoulder to equalise. Gwent restored their lead quickly with another superb piece of attacking play, but Carmarthen were game and equalised again through Josh Gwynne with a composed finish under pressure. The game remained at a stalemate until the halftime whistle. In the second half, Gwent would strike first once again from a short corner, taking the score to 3-2. Carmarthen ensured that the deadlock returned swiftly with Jonti Merry scoring a blistering from a short corner that the Gwent keeper could not stop. Gwent’s system of hanging a striker high continued to yield dividends, as Carmarthen conceded more short corners, leading to a 4th goal for Gwent. With the clock winding down, Carmarthen pressed hard to equalise for the 4th time, and a fantastic deflecting touch gave Merry his 2nd of the game, and Carmarthen’s 4th. With 10 minutes remaining, it was heartbreak for Carmarthen as Gwent found the net for a deciding 5th time. Despite exerting a massive amount of pressure in the closing stages, Carmarthen could not find a 5th goal despite several good chances. The final whistle brought an absolute classic match to an end, with all in attendance having been well entertained by a great contest between 2 teams sure to make waves in this division. A tough 2nd loss for Carmarthen despite an encouraging performance , as they now travel to league leaders Whitchurch 5th looking to get back in the hunt.

- Swansea 6th 3 - 5 Carmarthen Men
Saturday 5th December Carmarthen travelled down the M4 for a very early push back at Swansea on a glorious rainy day in South Wales. Last year the match did not go Carmarthens way but they were confident that they could gain a result against a very good Swansea team. The match started quickly, the first 5 minutes had Swansea and Carmarthen both having chances but it was the away team that struck first. A great pass from the midfield up to striker Gwynne led to a one on one chance with the goalkeeper. Gwynne ran the ball into the D and slotted it into the net through the goal keepers legs, 0-1 Carmathen. The first worry of the game came when energetic midfielder Will tried to intercept a ball behind the Swansea line, unfortunately he stretched a little too far and had to be substituted off the field. The second goal of the game came quickly thereafter, Carmarthen won a free hit deep in Swansea territory, the ball made its way to Jonti who was playing a deeper role than usual and he fired it at the goalkeeper and slotted it past him in the top corner. 0-2 Carmarthen. The first half didn't all go the way of Carmarthen, the Swansea attacks came and they made inroads earning a few short corners. While the defence handled them for the most part, one slick move by the Swansea captain had the Carmarthen defence wondering where the ball had gone when it had indeed been slotted into the back of the net. 1-2 Carmarthen. As the game went on, Swansea's defence crept further and further upfield, this gave striker Jack acres of space. The next goal of the day came from a Carmarthen hit out, the ball was played quickly up to the attack through the midfield to striker Jack on the left hand side, Carmarthen flooded the D and Jack picked out winger Adam who restored Carmarthens 2 goal lead. 1-3 Carmarthen. Just as the Carmarthen defence were preparing to park the bus for the last 2 minutes of the half, the attack had different ideas. The ball was fired up again into space with Striker Gwynne pouncing on the ball and scoring his second of the game. Half time score, 1-4 Carmarthen. In the second half, the Swansea defence managed to frustrate the Carmarthem attack. The counter attacks kept going with Gwynne and Jack again finding acres of space but the Swansea goal keeper managed to keep the score down. The first goal of the second half came from a Swansea attack down the right hand side. The winger broke infield and found an attacker in the D who slotted it past the goal keeper 2-4 Carmarthen. With 5 minutes left in the game, the tensions rose even further when Swansea found the back of the net again reducing the Carmarthen lead to a single goal. 3-4 Carmarthen. The last goal of the game came when Carmarthen defenders Wally and Brian were discussing whether they should send the defensive midfielder up to aid on the attack of the Swansea D. This reporter was advocating they they should keep the midfielder back which lead to him missing the last goal and addmitting he was incorrect 😅 Carmarthen attacked and sustained a bit of pressure on the Swansea D, the ball landed in Jontis lap and a magnificent strike put the ball into the back of the net ending any speculation of whether Swansea would level the game. 3-5 Carmarthen final score. Every player on the pitch played out of their skin against a very good Swansea side - shoutout to Jonti for his MoM performance. This is a huge result for Carmarthen and should give them plenty of confidence in the run up to Christmas. They currently sit 3rd in the Table. Team: Lee Jones Ryan 'Jags' Carvey Steffan 'Wally' Walters Russel Horsey Dave Fergusson Brian Greartrick Adam Poole Cai Morgan Will Heath Jonti Merry Josh Gwynne Jack Brennan Tom ferguson

- Carmarthen Men 1 - 2 Gwent 3rds
Sunday 23rd October 2021 Carmarthen entered the cup game full of confidence after their great start to the season. A number of changes were made to the squad after their 8-0 win at home to Bridgend the day before but they hoped to carry that momentum into the match. Their opposition today was Gwent 3rds who have also made a good start to the season comfortably sitting in the top 3rd of the table. The match itself gave a good display of competitive hockey. Both teams were equally impressive with their play and the keepers from both team had an outstanding game, special mention to Carmarthen's number 1 this season Lee Jones who's been in impressive form since taking over the duties. For the first 50 minutes the game went back and forth between both teams with neither being able to break the deadlock. The first goal came with 14 minutes left on the clock with Gwent finally being able to get past Carmarthens stout defending to take a late 0-1 lead. This could have lead to Carmarthens heads dropping but the opposite happened with the team pushing forward for an equalising goal late in the game. The opportunity came when midfielder and game captain Duncan took a free hit in the Gwent half and rifled the ball into the D with pinpoint accuracy finding winger Steffan who had lost his marker. Steffan then squared the ball straight to striker Dave who stood on the P spot but a remarkable save kept the ball out of the net but led to a Carmarthen short corner. With the match hanging in the balance this was their moment. Some would say what happened next was the best passage of play from the team all game, nay, all season. Striker Gwynne made the call, Duncan injected the ball to the top D where Jonti was waiting, he drew all the pressure before firing the ball back to Duncan, who slotted the ball into the back of the net. Your eyes do not deceive you, Carmarthen scored from a short corner. 1-1. With 5 minutes left on the clock, Gwent managed one last attack into Carmarthen territory and unfortunately for Carmarthen, we're able to put it past keeper Lee Jones and win the game 2-1 in the dying minutes. Not the result Carmarthen were hoping for, but the performance from the team was exceptional and the game itself was very competitive. We wish Gwent all the best in the next round and look forward to facing them in the league later in the year. Shout out to Lee Jones for being awarded the home teams M.O.M and to Rick for making his club debut.
